Most Asian Immigrants came to the US through the Angel Island immigration center or through the Canadian border.

In 4th grade I remember learning about immigration history. During the entire unit, there was no mention of Asian immigrants, let alone Sikh Immigrants, except for a small side-note describing Angel Island in a book about Ellis Island's historical significance. At the end of the unit, my fourth grade teacher assigned a project where we were to interview our family members to learn about their immigration history. After interviewing my grandmother, who had come to the U.S. after her brother, I still had unanswered questions. However, I soon forgot them once I began designing the paper doll we were instructed to make for the project.

When I was sitting down and brainstorming topics for this project, I came across the idea of focusing on my religious identity. I am a member of the Sikh faith and have found my religion to be a significant part of my identity and way of life. However, it often feels like many people do not know about my religion and those who do are sometimes mistaken about its core ideas. This causes a lack of understanding, and therefore respect, for Sikh beliefs. Because of this, most Sikh Americans have experienced some form of harassment due to their religious beliefs and identity. Many Sikh organizations have been working tirelessly to spread awareness of the Sikh religion, and while their efforts have been successful, there is still more work to be done.

My goals for this project included exploring the history of Sikhism in America and answering some of my unanswered question from when I was younger in order to learn more about my history and identity. I then wanted to share what I found with the wider community in an effort to educate more people about the Sikh faith. I believe that understanding more about the history of Sikhism in the United States will have an impact in reducing xenophobia and discrimination against Sikh people. Highlighting the ways in which the Sikh community impacted this country in positive ways over the years may help to dissolve the narrative of fear and distrust that many people continue to believe and perpetuate. Additionally, it is important that people understand the challenges Sikh people in the United States have faced, and continue to face.

The final product of my research is this website, that includes a general overview of Sikhism, key events about Sikhism’s history in America, and stories from Sikh community which you will find in this tab. If you have any questions or comments, you can contact me at the bottom of this site. Thanks!
